How the archive is built, refreshed, and refused.
The archive is a fixed number on purpose. Our twenty-three full-time curators, supported by a sixty-person advisory board of critics and programmers, review every submission against the existing ceiling. Each quarter the catalogue rotates by thirty to forty films: titles are retired with an essay, new entries arrive with one, and the count returns to seven hundred and one.
The average review time per submission is forty-seven days. Films that do not make the cut receive a personal rejection note from a named curator — not a form letter, not a silence. We have written close to eleven thousand of these notes since 1984, and they are kept on file.
Restorations are handled in-house. We completed our one thousandth four-K restoration in October 2024 — Jean Eustache's The Mother and the Whore, recovered from a private collection in Lyon. Three hundred and eighteen titles in the current rotation have been restored to four-K from prints sourced from Éclair, the Cinémathèque Française, and individual collectors.
Every film in the archive ships with a recorded audio essay — twelve to twenty-five minutes, voiced by a working critic, programmer, or the filmmaker themselves. There are over four thousand two hundred of these essays available to members, and they are the reason the archive reads as a teaching resource rather than a streaming shelf.

The archive is searchable along four axes that matter to film programmes, programmers, and instructors — and it is used as a teaching resource by one hundred and forty-two university departments, including NYU Tisch, AFI, and the Łódź Film School.
