Seventy films, argued for by name

701 Cinemas grew out of a repertory screening room founded in 1984 in Minneapolis, where a programmer's rule became our identity: no film screens without someone arguing for it in front of the room. Forty-one years later, as a members-only streaming archive and distribution label, the rule survives — fewer than 700 titles in rotation at any time, each restored, contextualized, and defended in a written curatorial case. Over 4,200 of those essays are in the archive, some written by the filmmakers themselves.

We are the opposite of the infinite scroll. No algorithm, no autoplay, no filler: our members come to a library they can finish, not a feed they can't.

What membership includes

• The rotating collection: independent and world cinema, hand-selected across eight decades, with curator's notes on every title.
• Restoration work: 318 titles restored to 4K to date, including prints recovered from collapsing archives.
• The screening calendar: premieres, director Q&As, and themed programs that give the films their room back.

As a distribution label we work the other side of the screen too — shepherding independent and restored films into theatrical and streaming release with the contextualization that helps them find their audience. Our members are cinephiles aged 35 to 60, and our retention numbers reflect a simple truth: a library with a point of view is more valuable than a catalog without one.
